How offsetting works

Carbon Offsetting is about creating a balance between those activities which release greenhouse gases like CO2 into the atmosphere and those activities which reduce or absorb greenhouse gases/CO2.

A carbon credit is a certified emission reduction arising from an activity outside the subject’s boundaries. Carbon credits can be traded and grant the holder the rights over that emission reduction claim. Carbon credits are acquired to offset the climate impact from a defined operation, product or services.

By creating a market where people can buy and sell carbon ‘credits’ – a greenhouse gas emission on one part of the planet can be offset by a reduction somewhere else.

BP Target Neutral believe in ‘offsetting done well’ so we work to a rigorous assessment criteria and selection process that ensure the integrity of the emissions reduction and the positive impact on the communities they operate.
